Throwback Thursday

Today is Thursday, so you know what that means drink specials, drunk people diving head first in those DM waters, and another dope blog from the one and only @Rell_Mac

If you’re a true hip-hop fan such as myself then you know what tomorrow is. Tomorrow is the day we lost one of the greats in hip-hop, one of the men that took east coast rap and put it on his back. March 9th is honestly a sad day in the hip-hop world; we lost Christopher Wallace a.k.a Notorious B.I.G. He gave us the listeners his life on tracks from being a kid from Brooklyn having nothing, to being the number one artist in the country. So in BIG’s memory, today’s Throwback Thursday is The LOX “We’ll Always Love Big Poppa.”

I don’t think the younger generations know how much BIG meant to hip-hop. He only released two albums (Ready to Die and Life After Death) and he is considered by most to be the greatest to ever touch a mic. He had everything a rapper would need, great lyrics, charisma, he stayed in the lately fashions, and the ladies loved him. To sum everything up BIG put on for the fat black ugly niggas, I still to this day wish I had an old school Coogi sweater because of BIG.  From watching interviews and reading articles everyone said he was the nicest dudes ever and showed that “Brooklyn Love” to everyone.

I wish we still had BIG!

Let’s talk about this song/video.

The song starts all with Styles P 1/3 of LOX, and at the time The LOX was signed to Bad Boy Records with Mr. Christopher Wallace. Styles spoke on BIG making it from nothing to something and in general how BIG did his thing and put NYC on. My favorite line in the Styles verse is “All the cats shinned but you would glow Big.” That line was true because at the time Frank White had the rap game in the palm of his hands, everything he touched he made hot. Following the verse from SP The Ghost is the hook and this is where everyone in the Bad Boy family makes their cameos. Everyone from Diddy, Faith, Total, and @DaReal_McCoy favorite rapper Ma$e. Throughout the video you'll see many cameos from several artist, Jay-Z, Dame Dash, 112, Missy, and Lauryn Hill.

After the hook is a verse from Jason Phillips aka Jadakiss, Kiss shared his love for his friend and label mate. “I flew V’s wit em, I blew trees wit em, couldn’t wait to go on tour across sea’s wit em.” That line right there showed that a lot of people looked up to BIG and not in a disrespectful way but careers depended on him as well. Lastly, Sheek Louch expressed his love for his good friend and label mate as well. Sheek talked about how he plans on raising BIG’s son as if he was his, and I personally hope he kept that promise. Sheek also mentioned "The East vs West Coast" beef and how it led to the nonsense of us losing two of the greats. Overall this was a great song from the young LOX members but it’s just sad that such a great song had to be made in the memory of someone dying.
