Over the weekend I sat down with Chicken member of hip-hop group P.O.P (Put On Productions) I asked him seven questions that I felt the general public would like to know and that will make for a damn good interview. I asked him what he thought about Wiz, Mac Miller, and Chevy Woods and also how you feels when people say all rappers from The Hill sound alike. Sit back and enjoy the interview!
Also make sure you go on itunes and support and buy his mixtape titled "HEEEYYY!"
1. How did P.O.P come together and who are all the members (put their twitter names so people can follow them) ?
Well we started rapping under the P.O.P entity in 2007 after Dejuan Blair was playing for Pitt basketball and my brother (@popyungmeez) and myself were rapping full time down iD labs with Josh Everette at the time. We got together and said we have to create something for all of us to always be connected and "putting on" was our theme and motive so we named it P.O.P and the rest fail into place. We linked up with a couple of other rappers that we knew would fit with us and had raw talent and now we're a whole movement.
Members of P.O.P
Meez @popyungmeez
Yung Gee @popyunggee
Kilo @popkilo
Dasher @Quan_Dash
Young M.E @youngmepop
Pimp @pop_itspimp
We have other members that don't rap such as Dejuan Blair (Spurs) D.J Kennedy (Cleveland Cavs) DeAndre Kane (Marshall Univ. Basketball) Greg Blair (Univ. of Cincinnati Football) etc.
2. Coming from the Hill District what do you say to those people who say "All rappers from the Hill sound alike?"
Lmao that's actually pretty funny to me. I'm from Da Hill so maybe my opinion is tainted but I don't believe we all sound alike. Especially everyone in P.O.P, we all sound different and that's what we think makes us special. Our similarities lie in our overall confidence and how we all approach the track with aggression, if you believe we all sound the same then you must haven't taken a close listen to P.O.P
Lol no not at all. we are friends, better yet brothers but in no way does he have ANY control over the music whatsoever. We go to the studio and we MAY send him the songs but that's about it. Meez and myself have full control over the entity and each artist is in control of their own content and distribution. Now Dejuan is our friend so like any millionaire friend of anyone he does help out at times but we're all so independent that any of us hardly ever make that call
4. What makes Chicken and P.O.P different from any other PGH artists?
The simplest way to answer that question is by saying "we're us and they're them" we follow no code nor guidelines and do things how we feel we should do then coming from the backgrounds that we have. We all speak facts in our rhymes and use personal feelings to create our music. With doing that, there is no way we can sound like any one else or group, our influences are our own neighborhood elders and role models that make up our "Hill" sound.
5. Coming from PGH what are your thoughts on Wiz, Mac Miller, and Chevy Woods and the music they make?
Well I'm proud to say I'm from Pittsburgh and that those guys still record here at iD Labs. each of those artist have their own sound but still have that Pittsburgh sound to their music with beats by Cardo, Jerm and Sledgren. I often listen to us and then them and notice the similarities in beat selection and rhyme schemes. Their just missing the element of Pittsburgh that we (P.O.P) bring to the table. oh and they're NOT from Da Hill lol
6. What goals and/or message are you trying to display with this new mixtape? (In other words what are you trying to accomplish?)
Individually we all have our own goals but as a unit we want to "put on." We want to bring happiness thru our music and stop some of the jealousy here by bringing businesses here and letting some of this money float around the Pittsburgh area to help the mentality here. Our goals are simply long term and we want to make a permanent change in our community and the way we live in Pittsburgh. This music is just our stage to showcase our talents and our lives to help out others in the long run, for example. We're all the spokesmen for various "stop the violence" campaigns and hold annual cookouts for the community along with different basketball leagues we run and partake in for the youth. But with this mix tape alone "HEEEYYY" I just want to introduce myself to the world and show my personality as a whole and my music creativity. I have all types of songs on this mix tape that really tells who I am on my best day and even times when I'm down
7. Are there any other project from the P.O.P camp that we should be looking forward to this year and where can the fans get the music at?
Honestly we work so much that new projects get started every day. Pimp is releasing "It's Pimp" very soon. along with M.E releasing "The Introduction" some time in May, Meez & our Producer Shod Beats are releasing a mixtape in May as well entitled "We Workin." My next project will be "LL Cool Dré" which is another old school based tape and Dasher is working on his debut project as we speak but he has yet to set the date for his release.
